Consumer NZ backs calls for action against Metlifecare

Consumer NZ and the Retirement Village Residents Association (RVResidents) are calling on the Commerce Commission to take stronger action against retirement villages, particularly Metlifecare.

The consumer advocate and RVResidents said Metlifecare was implementing unfair contract terms that required residents to pay for maintenance and repairs despite having no ownership rights.

The commission previously warned operators that such terms might breach the Fair Trading Act, but Consumer NZ and RVResidents said that little has changed.

Both organisations are urging the commission to seek a court ruling on the terms.
