The government has announced plans to reform the Overseas Investment Act, as part of its drive to lure more foreign investment to New Zealand shores as a lever for growth.
Announcing the changes on Sunday, Associate Finance Minister David Seymour said the package of reforms would speed up decisions and provide more confidence to investors, while protecting national interests.
The changes include making decisions in just 15 days for all investments aside from residential land, farmland and fishing quota, unless the application could be contrary to New Zealand’s national interest.
Other proposals included strengthening the government’s ability to intervene on the rare occasion that a transaction is not in the national interest.
