Resi25: Industry converges on Auckland’s Aotea Centre

27th March 2025 By Staff Reporter | news@propertyticker.co.nz | @propertyticker

Around 250 property professionals have converged on Auckland’s Aotea Centre for the Property Council New Zealand’s Residential Development Summit.

Property Council chief executive Leonie Freeman opened Resi25 at Auckland’s Aotea Centre

Delegates were welcomed by Property Council chief executive Leonie Freeman and premier sponsor Nigel McKenna, founder and chair of Templeton Group.

Speakers today include RMA Reform Minister Chris Bishop, Kāinga Ora chief executive Mat Crockett, Labour housing spokesperson Kieran McAnulty, and Precinct Properties deputy chief executive George Crawford.

“Our expert panels and keynote sessions will provide insights into the future of housing, including the growth of build to rent and the evolving dynamics of community housing and student accommodation,” Freeman said.

“We are all united by a shared vision thriving, sustainable cities where every New Zealander has access to quality housing. While progress is being made, we cannot afford complacency without collective action. Our future remains uncertain yet I always remain optimistic.

“Everyone has something to offer, each of us holds a piece of the puzzle, and by working together, we can build a better future for housing in New Zealand. So I hope this summit sparks innovation, fosters transformational discussions and inspires collaborative action.”

McKenna said the industry was facing some challenges but there were good reasons to be confident of its future.

“Everybody in this room knows we’re in tough times and tough times economically or tough times in our development fraternity,” he said.

“We’re burdened by legislation, legislative changes, a lack of infrastructure, lack of funding for infrastructure.

“I think the one thing that we’re lacking most of all, which I think is easy to change, is confidence. We just need to be confident about who we are and what we are.”

The Residential Development Summit started with an Auckland tour on Wednesday and concludes this evening with a cocktail function.
