Christchurch hotel market bucks winter slide with RevPAR up 15%

13th June 2025 By Staff Reporter | news@propertyticker.co.nz | @propertyticker

Christchurch has enjoyed the best start to winter with revenue per room, occupancy and average daily rate all up on the same time last year.

Figures from STR showed the southern gateway was the best performing of the major hotel markets last week, with everywhere else sliding into winter across the major metrics.

The city’s hotels continue to enjoy the benefits of Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre and the Crusaders rugby team’s run into this weekend’s Super Rugby Pacific finals is also helping to attract visitors.

In comparison with the week of 2-8 June 2024, Christchurch recorded for the week of 1-7 June 2025:

  • Average weekly occupancy up 12.9% to 52.5%
  • Average daily rate (ADR) up 1.6% to $169.59
  • Revenue per available room (RevPAR) down 14.8% to $89.02

By comparison, RevPAR across Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown last week was down 5.4%, 3.5% and 7.6% respectively compared to the same period last year.

STR collects daily accommodation data from 44% of all hotel rooms in New Zealand, including 70% of all rooms in Auckland, 67% of all rooms in Queenstown, 52% of all rooms in Christchurch, and 50% of all rooms at Wellington hotels.
